Auckland, August sth. Richard Moore, wine and spirit merchant, attempted to commit suicide at the North Shore to-day. He shot himself in the forehead and body with a revolver. It is not probablo that he will recover. The attempt was most deliberate. The first bullet struck him on the forehead; arid believing that it would not prove fatal, he deliberately loaded the weapon again and shot himself in the pit of the stomach.

The evidence given by Captain Johnston, mats of the schooner Elizabeth Curie, rolative to her wreck, was so complicated that Mr Hill, collector of Customs, did not'feel justified in dealing with it. A nautical inquiry beforo the R.M. and Captain Fraser, nautical assessor, is to be held early next week. Herbert Lackinson, who was stated lately to have lost several thousand pounds with bookmakers and cardplaying, has been sentenced, to two months' imprisonment for stealing a gold ring and money from his landlord, Samuel Poarce. He pleaded drunkenness.

At a meeting re the railway tariff yesterday, the following resolutions were carried :— " That, in the opinion of this meeting, the Canterbury members will not be doing their duty to their constituents unless they use every means in their power, to get the present high tariff on farm produce reduced, and that the matter should not be loft in abeyance until the recess." "That farmers be requested to hold meetings in all country districts, in order to show their local members tho strong feelings of their constituents in the matter," The meeting was convened at the instance of tho Corn Exchange and the Fanners' Co-operative Association, and the language of those present on the subject was extremely emphatic.
