THE HOLIDAY.

Monday was almost universally observed in town as a holiday, but yesterday was only partially so. The weather was considerably to blame for this, for it was co bad aa to deter $c jple from making holiday ; but should to-day Ireep anything like fine, no doubt many of "the business places will be shut;.

The nineteenth annual gathering of the Caledonian Society of Otago commenced on Monday, the 3rd of January. The sports «hould have begun on New Year's Day; but owing to the weather, and principally to the fact that the Society's grounds at Kensington were partly flooded—the drains having been in bad working °™e^.— the sports were postponed until the following Alonday. In the meantime the drains were cleared, and by Monday morning, although rain had frequently fallen, the ground was in tolerably good condition. The weather on Monday was as unfavourable as it had been on Saturday—the day was cold and snowery, but the attendance at the sports was surprisingly large. Fully 5000 persons visited the ground, ana a very large majority of them remained throughout tne, day, and apparently enjoyed the sports tnoroughly, notwithstanding the rain and the mud. mci the weather been fine the attendance would proDa oiyuave amounted to between 12,000 and 14,000, and the presence of that number on a fine day would not have testified more forcibly than did the attendance on Monday to the public interest taken in the' sports, and to the popularity of the h!?l y" A 1 th(>ugh all the refreshment-booths had been purchased by Mr Inglis, arrangements had been made with persons engaged in the " trade," and, so Jar as the public were concerned, the sale of the oootns to one person made no difference whatever. JNO steps were taken to prevent the playing of games of chance and skill for money on the "round and such games were introduced in considerable numDer and variety; but these ventures could not have proved very remunerative on Monday. In other respects the arrangements were all that could be desired. Fruit-stalls and luncheon-tents were on the ground. The privilege of the sale of such light refreshments having been sold, the Committee refused to allow to be brought on the ground w cases of fruit which had been sent by Mr Inglis for gratuitous distribution, because such distribution would have materially interfered with the value of the privileges the Society had sold. Since last year the society has had a very neat box constructed for the use of reporters. The box is open in the front, with windows on each side, and as it is placed inside the ring it is agreat convenience to the representatives of the Press. The Headquarters Band was in attendance, ana helped to enliven the proceedings by playing in a n ve^' sP""ited manner during the greater portion of

The programme of sports is similar in character and extent to that put forward last year, the entries are as numerous, and the competitions as close and exciting, uver £000 is given by the Society in belts, medals, and - money prizes. Fur the Caledonian Handicap the money prizes amount to about £65, while for the wrestling on the first day's programme the prizes amounted to £42, in addition two which two champion ™.' °f £30 each are offered to those who noid the championship for three years in succession, me prizes are given upon a very liberal scale, and the result 13 that the entries are numerous; and as the society has a very able official handicapper—Mr A. Austin—the result is that the contests are admirable. £or the principal event the first day—the Caledonian uanaicap—there were 30 entries, and 21 competed. It ™. expected that this event would be won by a Cnristehurch pedestrian, Mr J. Hatton, who started at scratch, but he only succeeded in winning one of: we heats for the second distance—22o yards. The nignest aggregate number of points was made by Mr Duncan who was first in two of the distances .nd third in the last distance, making five points more than any of the other competitors. Mr Duncan has run at the Society s: games fr many years, and though always running well and fairly, he has not been verylortunate nitnerto. His success on Monday gave general satisB^J!? nt' and £ S hei"i t- on' a Bood s Purt at the finish the spectators cheered him lustily. The second prize was carried off by Mr Roth, a Christchurch runner, whose handicap was about the same as Mr Duncan's.
