THE LATE MAYOR.
TO TIIK EDITOR. Sir, —The writer whoso communication on tho above subject appears)in this morning's issue, has not missed, but evaded, tho point of my letter of tho 22nd instant, which was, that apart from the vexed question surrounding Mr Walter's acquisition of the Mayoral chair, his conduct during his term of office has been of a character which, as I have alreadj' said, entitled him to tho thanks of the citizens ; and upon that ground, and that alone, I have ventured to suggest that some recognition of his civic services should be made.
I abstain from remark upon the somewhat rambling and disconnected references to a "petition" and other subjects referred to in the letter under reply, and dragged in by your correspondent for no other purpose, apparently, than to befog the real question ; further than this, that I think the matter should be left to tho sense of fairness of the citizens generally, and ought not to be influenced by such observations and suggestions as those made by the writer.— I am, &c, Citizen. Dunedin, December 30th.
