In reference to this lea?e, Mr Ri,B. Denniston, Go- ' vernment C»al.Viewer, in his. evidence given ;before the ltoyal Com mission at Westport, : says :—V Tha 1 tofcil. tonnage in this lease,-including the. East arid West slopss, is about 3,C00,000 tons, the coal being,of tho best quality." ■ : The report o£ analysis of coal from this part of the j field at Woolwich Dockyard showd that it is equal to the best noi th of England coal for hteam purposes {vide I Admiralty report on Kelson coal presented to Nelson Provincial Council, March 16th, 1B0G). t The railway is completed and open for traffic from Westport to Waimangaroa, and the Wellington Coal Company have made a branch line of one mile five chains in length up the river, and from this point, it is proposed to make ft tramway to the coal, about two miles iri length. The Government coal waggons will be loaded at end of Tramway line, thence forwarded ' over Government railway to Westport where there is now building railway wliar/, Btaiion, sidings, arid a , large viaduct and coal staiths; from which the coal will bo shipped direct into tha vessels. Tho port of West- ; port offer* great facilities for shipping. The average depth:of water of tlio bar being 12 to 15ft, and it is expected,wlien the Protective vVorks, now in course ; of construction, are completed, the depth will be increased to from 18 to 20ft. ■ - . :■ I By careful computation it Ins "oeen estimated that Uio cost of openinj; up and connecting tho mice with the Government railway, including all necessary plant, ' will not exceed £15,000, and further, the coal can be shipped free on board at Westport at &j per tsn. • The terms of the leaeo will compel the Company to have the mine in working order early in 1878, so that shareholders may rely on having returns for their money within 12 months. ■ Prospectuses and forms! of application for Shares may bo obtained of . : .;..
