John Cotton and Catherine M'Pherson charged with similarly offending on the same day, were each mulcted in a penalty of 20a with the alternative of 48 hours' imprisonl ment. George Walsh and Patrick M'Cartnywere each fined ss, with the usual alternative ; Thos. Hutcheson and Ann Parser were let off with a caution; and Robt. Johnston was fined 10s, with the option of 4» hours' imprisonment. •,.... Indecency.—John Black, for this offence m Maclaggan street, was sent to gaol for T£ days, with hard labour.

Stealing Proclivities.—Charles HenryLoleman, a youth of silly appearance, was charged with stealing a lithograph from the billiard-room of the Provincial HoteL Accused pleaded Guilty. Sub-Inspector Mallard said that Mr Moss, the owner of the lithograph (a copy of Val Vose's photograph), was playing billiards, and prisoner sneakei away with it. When charged, he denieo having taken it, but was subsequently arrested with it in his possession. Detective Shury said prisoner was imprisoned for a similar offence some short time ago. He arrived by the steamer Easby, and from enquiries witness learned that his father, who was in a good position in London as a. potatoe salesman at Covent Garden Market, had sent him here to get rid of'him,-he having been repeatedly in gaol for pettylarceny. Witness had had him under surveillance for some time past. Prisoner (hesitating): I was going away by coach, this morning for Queenstown. Detective Shury: He is not to be believed. The Magistrate said he was convinced that accused was a very bad young man, and ordered him to be imprisoned and kept to hard labour for two calendar months Larceny. — William Collins pleaded guilty to stealing a coat valned at £4 front the Albion Hotel, Maclaggan street, th» property of John M'Vicar. Sub-Inspector Mallard said this was one of that class o£ cases which are of frequent occurrence. Mr Bathgate for the plaintiff, who is in Hokitika, made a statement and cross-examined defendant, the ease being further adjourned until Wednesday. G. Bell v. Shag Valley Quartz Mining Company,—This was an adjourned case. Mr Bathgate appeared for plaintiff, and Mr Howorbh for defendant. Some discussion ■took place relative to His Worship's jurisdiction. Mr Mansford adjourned the case.
