A number of enterprising men havo established a new brooch of manufacturing inda»try io the Learaontb district by starting boiliog-down work*. The locality selected it one in every way specially' adapted, and is situated on a Urj^e block of land at a distance from any habitation, thereby precluding any annoyance which in necessity arises from the business. The building and appurtenances are of a first-claw and substantial nature, no expense having been spared by the proprietors to render them aa complete aa possible. The boiler is solidly built in with granite, and attached to it thetc is a brick stack 55 feet high. Tho boiler has been set upon an improved plan of tbe architect. The whole of the ironwork in the boiler, vata and fittings, have been roado by Hick man and Sona. of Ballnrat The works have been designed by Mr Caeolli. of Ballarat, and carried out under hia supervision by the contractor, Mr F. H. Byrne, a practical engineer. Attached to the premises are extensive sheep yards, piggeries, and other requisites for utilising the offal, &o. ; a company's office, also comfortable) buildings for the men employed about the works have born erected. An abundant supply of good water is obtained from a spring on the premises, which has not failed even daring tbe present annsaal dry season. In connection with the establishment, a cooperage for making casks to hold tallow ia in full operation, and a supply of 10,000 staves brought from Western Port is on band. There is also a supply of 700 tons of firewood ataoked ready for use. Working operations have been carried on for tho past month, and it is to be hoped the enterprise may prove successful, and remunerative to the proprietors, and a permanent industry to the district It is contemplated to stort other branches of the business, for which the establishment has been especially designed.
