BISHOP JENNER.

To the Editor of tke Otaco Daily Times.

Sm—ln the Daily Times of the I9th inst. a letter appeared, signed •* Aletheia," in which reference waa made to some of Dr Jenner's proceedings at home. Tho writer subjoined the oopy of a letter from the k.to Archbishop of Canterbury to the Archdeacon of Winchester, in which it is stated that tho lato Primate had upon more than ono occasion found fault with tho Ihshop of Dunedin for his Ritualistic tendencies, and in one instance bad censured him in such terms tbat he never ventured to reply. Tho Primate addod that he should "certainly censure bim "again for entering a strango diocese, the Bishop of which ho must know gave no encouragement to such proceeding as occurred at Whitwell Church." As it would probably interest many of your readers who have seen this letter to know what these proceedings were, I subjoin an extract from tho Hampshire Independent of the 23rd September last, which it will be seen refers to the services held in connection with the re-opening of the parish church at Whitwell, Isle of Wight.— lanti.te, CIiAfIOBLK.

"WHITWELL. — RK-OI'KSISO;* Of, THE Pari.su Church.—-The Church Times of Saturday gives the following account of the services in connection with the above :—On Tuesday, tho feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Vi'gin Mary, this parish was tho scene of hearty rejoicings, occasioned by the re-opening of the church after undergoing complete restoration. Tho services of the day commenced with a Low Celebration at eight o'clock, which was well attended. A few minutes before 11 o'clock tho Lord B'shop of Dunedin, :tho clergy and choir of Whitwell (assisted by many from St. Michael's Swanmore ; Holy Trinity, Ryde; and St. Mary, Broke), assemled on the north side of the churohyard, and having vested, formed themselves into a procession in the following order : —Processional Cross, birne by churchwarden ; choir of St. Mary, Whitv/ell; banner; banner; choir of St. Michael's, Swanmore ; banner ; choir of Holy Trinity, Ryde ; choir of St. Mary, Brooko; banner ; clergy, two and two, in Burplicts, white stoles, &c. ; banner ; Lord Bishop of Dunedin and chap am. The processional was :" Brightly gleams our banner," and considering that many of the choirs had never previously, practised together the result was most patisfactory. The chancel was completely filled. The, Bishop having reached hia throno on the north side and the clergy se»t>d in th* smaller chancel, of St Mary, Matins wero sun? by the Eev. G. B. Brooke, and Hooker Wix, of St. Michael's, Swanmore. The sermon waa dolivcrod by the Rev. O. B. Hodges, orgatrising clerical secretary to tho London Free and' Open Cbnrck Association, from Jeremiah .kit 43. At ita conclusion, a solemn To Deum waa sung before the high alter (forthtrb are two altars at Whitwcll), which was one blaze of lighted wax tapora and bright llowera, and at this timo tbo effect was most striking—tho evening sun shone through tho magnificent west window, the work of Messrs Lavere, Barraud, and Westlakc, shedding tho most brilliant hues through the wholo church, aud upon tho many coloured hoods and cassocks of the priests and choir as they stood facing eastwards. This dny will long be remembered at Whitwcll, and it only remains for us (says tho paper from which wo quote) to congratulate the vicar upon the success which has attended his exertions in tho cause of Catholicism. Wo heartily wish him and his fellow helpers God speed."
