Wednesday Evening,

The shipment of stores to Havelock continues to impart a little life to business—orders are also rather more numerous from our own gold fields, especially Tuapeka and that district; altogether] the feeling is rather more cheerful, although prices are still very low.

Flour has been more extensively dealt in this week, holders having conceeded. a little from the extreme price of L 35; we now quote L 33 to L3i as the current wholesale value.

Sugar is also rather more enquired for, but there seems a disposition on the part of buyers to delay stocking until the large clearing sale advertised for Wednesday next.

Bacon and Hams.—An increased business is doing in these articles. Fine new cure (York) has baen sold at Is, and Sinclair's at Is ljd.

Cheese.—Sale of Cheddar at Is, aud Colonial at lid.

Candies also continue to be enquired for, and Belmont lib packets have been sold at 13 Ogelby's at lid and Neva at Is. Beer Bottled.—Fair sale at 10s 6d and 11s for ale and stout respectively. Bulk beer in very limited request.

We understand that the Banks have just agreed to rave the rates of discount. The following scale will be rigidl} adhered to :—

Two Months' Bills .. .. 8 per cant Three „ ' 9 per cent Four „ 10 per cent Overdrawn accounts, 12 per cent.; and overdue bills. 12 per cent

Mercantile business has been conducted so quietly for months past, and with so remarkable an ab3?nce of speculation, that this strong measure, on the part of the Banks, cannot have been resorted to, on account of any commercial pressure. We think it must be intended rather to check the speculation in cattle and sheep, which it is notorious, had been so extensively carried on lately.

Messrs A. Q-. Fisher and Co, offered for sale by auction yesterday, June Ist, at Waikouaiti, the Golden Fleece Hotel and premises, which were bought in at L 3500. The land in the Hawkesbury District was offered for sale at the same time, and was also bought in at L 3 per acre.
