TOTAL WRECK OF THE WHALING SHIP PACIFIC, OF HOBART TOWN.

ALL HANDS SAVED.

We regret to hafo to record the total wreck of the ship Pacific, 347 tons, Captain Sherburd, from Hobavt Town on a whaling voyage, nt Patterson's Inlet, Stewart's Island, on Ist February instant. The Pacific was the property of Mrs Seal, of Hobart, Town, and had been fifteen month1? out, having 8 tnns of sperm oil on board when she was -wrecked. Caj>t. Sherburd states, that on Saturday, 31st J,-w., the Pacific was in company with the brig Cosmopolite, laudlocked in Patterson's Inlet. During the day a heavy westerly gale set in, which increased in violence during the night, and on Monday morning it blew a petfect hurricane. The Pacific was at this time riding1 with both anchors ahead. Between nine and ten o'clock in the moraicg, the ship dragged her anchors, and went stern on to the rocks, the concussion smashing in her stern. The sea rushed in through the breach, so that in half an hour the ship was full of water, and in an hour's time she sank in three and a-half fathoms at high water, where she now lies. On the water rushing into the vessel, the captain and crew (twenty-six hands) took to the boats, as the only means of saving their lives, asthe water came in so rapidly that sorely anything was saved from the wreck—the ship'-s papers and nearly all the nautical instruments beirg lost. The crew landed on the island, but in doing so three of the boats were stove in. Captain James, of the Cosmopdlite, rendered what assistance he could, but the gale was so terrific that he had as much as he could do to provide for the safety of his own vessel. Captain Sherburd ard eight of his crew arrived in Invercargill by the Cosmopolite yesterday* -Ibid.
