DEADLY SPANISH FLU. £
BUDAPEST. February 5. There are no signs of any abatement of the Spanish influenza. says a recent Budapest message. On the contrary> the disease is increasing in virulence and attacking its victims in the stomach and lungs. __ In the former ense the percentage of deaths is not high, but in the latter the mortality is very great, patients sometimes'succumbing in a'few hours. The earnest attention of the Budapest medical profession is devoted to stamping out the malady. Professor Ladisiau Detre. Professor of Medicine at Budapest University, in a report lie published, states that-the Spanish influenza bacillus is so exceedingly small that it remains at a fixed level in the air, neither dropping nor falling, and. hence it may be carried thousand.-, of miles by any haphazard air current. This precludes the possibility of checking it by sanitary measures. Another Budapest professor. Dr. Feaes. after repeated experiments with monkeys, notes that the disease can only attack human beings or animals with human characteristics. Dr. Detre has prepared a serum from horse blood, hut it appears to have little elfect on those who have already contracted the infection, and only a certain airount of success'as a preventative.
