THE LOCAL MARKETS,

Oamaru Mail Office, Monday Afternoon. The local grain, markets have not yet emerged from the soporific atmosphere with which they have been enveloped for some considerable period, and vendors have to content themselves''-with a policy of marking time. As regards wheat, a few southern millers are the only operators. There is a good deal of this grain offering-in the country, but the ideas held; of value by sellers and buyers are so much at variance that business is" prohibited. A good deal of South Canterbury wheat is offering in North Otagp. arid while tlie quality may scarcely be so good as the local, its presence here has a steadying effect. Today quotations are: For velvet 3s i to' 3s 8d net.' on, trucks; red; wheats,: 3s 6kl to 3s 7Jd. - ■ V - The oats market is lifeless; and the. only hope of resuscitation is in the Waiteniata, which may be here in the course of a week or so to load produce for the Commonwealth: If this should eventuate there is a possibility of some mevoment in this cereal. . During the week 2s nei was- given for small lots of A grade, and Is TOd net for 8. The potato market is much firmer. There are not many offering from the country, as supplies are now getting into small'compass ; neither is there any disposition on the part of merchants to buy beyond the range of requirements. There is little'doubt-that Australian export is about.finished, although.quantities are still.being railed for shipment. North Island, however,.has been making inquiries, and the prospects of the market seem good for the remainder of the season. Quotations: £8 10s to £8 15s net' at sidings for potatoes of really good quality. -

FROZEN MEAT MARKET, • The Colonial Consignment' and Distr.ibut;.ng Company reported as follows on 20tli September:— New Zealand; mutton. —The Nairnshire, witli 28,579 carcases and tiro lonic with 28,292 carcases, have arrived. The output suffers from the competition of English ewes and Scotch lambs and the superior attraction ■of cheaper beef, and prices show a slightly weaker tendency. however, have uo occasion to force sales, and" stocks permit them to view the reduced consumption with equanimity. Frozen Lamb.—Receipts consist of 81,627 carcases from New Zealand', 770 carcases from Australia, and 3334 carcases from South America, The demand" maud grows steadily less and buyers give the preference in many cases to Scotch hill lambs -aitl a.bou'b Jd per lb more money. Quotations for lightweight New Zealand are unchanged, but a better inquiry is growing up for the heavier weight carcases at improving rates. The offerings of Australian and South American lambs are too limited to be quoted. Frozen in store are fairly heavy, and' have been increased | by 4.129 quarters from New Zealand. 7748 quarters from Australia and 21,707 I quarters.from Smith America. The demand', however, has been killed temporarily by the heavy and cheap supplies of chilled beef, but confidence in the future appears unabated. Quotiaations are nominally a lit'ile easier.
