TREATMENT OF GANGER.

SURPRISING REStTLTS. ' Dr Julius Gnezda gives the following particnlars of n new treatment of cancer discovered by him. An important paper vfis read at the Paris Academy of Medicine bv Proressor Lettille on the subie-jE. Dr .Julius Gnezda, of Agram, has pursued researches in London. Berlin, ai.d Paris, and reported a-.particular;.case of cancer which was operated upon two yc-ars ago in Paris, and which, after an immediate relapse, was submitted to his treatment, with the rcsnlt that the patient,-a ladv now 81 years of age, continues in good general health, without any evidence of a cancerous growth remaining. Dr Gnezda "explained that the treatment does not profess to be a miraculous cure of the various forms oi / cancer, but what ifc accomplishes is an arrest of the cancerous growth, with a certain amount of improvement in the general health owing to the necrosis of the cuncenns parts. The paper read -before the Academy is too techinal to be summed up by a layman, bnt the substance of, the communication is that the treatment prevents the formation of new cancerous growths, and shrivels up to a certain extent these that exist. _ ' " - The- preparation used by Dr Gnezda, consists of an albumin, containing a percentase of ansenic and phosphorus.of about six milligrammes par gramme, forming a compound which he has n-imed "arphoaline." This preparation, which is not caustic, is a brownish powder without 'taste, insoluble in water or in mild acids, and soluble when warmed in alkalis. It can be applied locally in the form of the dry powder, or may be swallowed in- the form of capsules. _

EFFECTS OF THE REMEDY. Dr Gnezda has been experimenting with the treatment for-.ths last nine, years, and his method has been observed by the directors of hospitals in Paris and elsewhere.. and they give very encouraging reports. When applied locally the ivmedy has the effect or causing a partial diving up, or necrosis, of the tissue, and it has been observed that the. application causes m the neighbourhood of the healthy parts the formation of. a new connective tissue, which little", by little tends to take the place of the cancerous formation. The action of the preparation has also been tested chemically.- and it has been proved that, of two cancerous fragments, the one treated with arphdaline lost its q>ecial cj.iiI cerous appearance and became inodorous, while the other fragment not so treated retained all the characteristic nauseous properties of cancel*. The internal treatment ia, by means of capsules,- taken after meals.' After three days there may be a marked ,cessation of . pain. The case specially cited' before the Aca- ' demy of Medicine is that' of a lady ivho was aged ;79 two years ago. and who wis onerated on for cancer on the left cheek. The operation did not check the growth. Fr.ur locai applications 'were then made, and a certain quantity of the remedy was administered daily for a month. The patient had greatly improved at the end iif that time, and cicatrisation iad set in.

The genera! health of the patient had also become better, and-there has been 110 relapse since that time nor any tendency I n! It renewal 0! the -cancerous growth.. either at the spot operated 011 or any where I the. The lady- i 5 now 81 years of age, ! and is residing in Paris. Dr Gnexda has treated ten cases ot cancer in. Paris within the last two years, and oat of these, two appear to lie perfect cures; fn-e-showed a' considerable improvement; two have removed, and only one died, but of another disease, viz., pneumonia and nephritis. The committee expressed its approval of the ivork of'Dr Gnezda, andTequested to see microscopical pieparatians. Dr Gnezda has these preparations ready,_jmd will- show them to the Academy. ' -
