On the eve of the arrival of the French ftolumn at Fez. a detachment of ths garrison, under their officers, destroyed Lemta. a suburb of Fez, and burned the houses. They killed a number of people in dispersing the inhabitants. Eighty Lemta women and children were sold into slavery in the Fez market, the prices ranging from a dollar to forty dollars. The native papers bitterly protest tr> the Maghzen and Europeans who had previously promised the tribes immunity. General Monier had a further coherence with Mulai Hafid, who asks that--5000 French troops remain to garrison Fez and a similar number at Meqninez. He declares that their withdrawal would be the signal for a revolution. It is certain that neither the Europeans nor the Sultan will remain when the French leave. General Gourando's column, witli General Dalbiez's column, wliicn went from Fez to assist Gourando, reached Fez on the 26th. after heavy fighting. Tangier, June 1. Widespread indignation has been aroused by the barbaric treaclierv of the Fez "arrison towards "Lemta, winch had previously been assured that it would be immune. The garrison started ostensibly to punish unknown assailants of postmen. The soldiers were determined to punish somebody Most or the farms at Lemta belonged to wealthy inhabitants of Fez. The Sultan has dismissed El Gaur, Grand Vizier, who was the author of. peculations and oppressive exactions from tribes. El Gaur retains his personal property, but the Maghzen seized iiis wealth.
