PRESENTATION AT MAHENO.

(From a Correspondent.) Quietly, unostentatiously, did the Maheno School Committee meet on the evening of the 25th instant to perform what to each member was a labor of love. Mr J. Nicolson, the headmaster of the school, had, according to MrHugh Wilson, ta&en unto himself a wife without consulting the Committee. Therefore the Committee quietly bought him a handsome marble clock as a reminder of what was due to them. That this handsome clock, with a pair of beautiful ornaments for the good young lady the master has made his helpmeet, might be presented, the Committee, with their wives, the teaching staff, and the nearest neighlwrs in the profession, Mr and Mrs A. M. Barnett, met in the school. Mr Hugh Wilson opened the proceedings by stating the purpose of the gathering and by setting forth the good work done by Mr Nicolson. He showed that Mr Nicolson had gained the hearts of the people by his skill, his strict attention to duty and his genial and kindly bearing to one and i all. Mr A. Crow followed with a speech on similar lines. Mr Barnett, on being culled upon, spoke of the arduous duties of the teaching profession, and how gratifying it must be to ;i teacher of Mr Nicolson's ability to rind his work so highly appreciated. In his reply Mr Nicolson thanked the Committee for such splendid gifts to him and Mrs Nicolson. He said the gifts were beyond what they had a right to give, as he had done nothing beymid his duty to warrant their puttine him under so great an obligation. He trusted that he would continue to earn .their good will and that, so long as he was in Maheno, he would by his zeal and energy earn for the school a good name. During the evening Mrs Low and Miss Christie delighted the company with musical items, and the ladies as a whole provided good things that satisfied the inner man.
