REDCLIFF NOTES.

! (Frpm. Our Own Correspondent.) In spite of the many gloomy forebodings the farmers after all have hada fairly good season. The threshing mill has heen busy at work, and' in most eases the result has exceeded expectations. On light shingly soil poor returns have been the rule, as might have been expected, owing to the phenomenal drought, but'on the heavier land 'goo*!' returns have been secured. Mr R. Allen, at the Valley, Waikakahi, threshed 60 bushels an acre from a 90acre paddock, while Messrs Brown, P. JBreen, Forbes, and R. Geddes have se'ciired up to 40 bushels an acre from some of their paddocks, but., the yield on light land will considerably lessen the average. Owing to the shortage of grass a lange acreage of winter and; autumn .feed has been sown. Messrs M. M'Rae, Thornton, Fleming, Breen, "Waldie, and others have sown down several acres in rye, oats, and barley for early feeding. . ,: The annual meeting of householders for the election of a School Committee passed oil' very quietly, and. the new Committee are pulling well together to improve the surroundings of" the new site. The old party cry of "East and West," which prevailed before tin- removal of the old school to its present site at Ikiiwai has lost its Significance. "Le roi est niort, vive le roi!" seems to he tho motto, and all interested In the success of the school at its now site at Ikawsii are loyally working to further the educational interests of the district. : The many sportsmen who visit the district for the fishing and shooting on the Waitaki banks have had very varied Jnok. Messrs I. Wall, J. Wall, jun., and Tavendale have secured good hags with the grey duck, while Messrs Studsholme, Manchester, and Pillnow have had good sport with the rabbits, which are swarming on the islands. The RedcHff Hotel, which has recently changed hands, has been reno!rated externally and in,ttfrna)s» b;* Mr Alex. Simpson, the present proprietor, the water supply improved, and several additions made, and anglers and sportsmen who visit Redcliff are unanimous in praising the accommodation and cuisine provided.
