WAIMATE NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) —Pipe Band Bazaar. —

The above was opened in the Drill Hall on Thursday by Councillor R. Inkster, who, in the absence of the Mayor, made a few remarks pointing out the object for which funds are being raised, viz., to enable the Band to erect a room on the section leased them at a peppercorn rental by the Borough Council, ' and asking the public to accord their support to such a worthy object. . Inthe evening, the Mayor (Mr N. Francis) addressed the gathering. The bazaar was of the usual kind, and the goods were disposed of by. the old-fashioned raffle. On Thursday £62 and an Friday £35 was taken. —W.C.T.U.— A meeting of the local branch was held on Wednesday. Mrs Penney presided, and addresses were given by visitors from Timaru. Arrangements were made for Mrs Harrison Lee to address a series of meetings in the district. On May 20th and 21st Mrs Lee speaks at Waimate, on 22nd at Morven, and on the 23rd at Nukuroa. —St. Patrick's Club.— Tho annual meeting was held this week. The following officers were elected: —President, Rev. Father Berger; vice-president, Mr T. Pearce; secretary, Mr M-. Healey; treasurer, Mr F. Cleary. The report referred to the lack of interest shown by members, and expressed the hope that more support will be given the Club during the coming season. —St. Augustine Young Men's Socieey.— Although Bishop Julius met with a nasty motor" accident on his way to Waimate on Friday, the rev. gentleman was able to complete his. journey and deliver his lecture on "St. Paul's Cathedral." The delivery merited a larger audience than was present, being both instructive and interesting. A number of lantern views were shown, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the lecturer.

—Pigeon Flying.— . Thirty-three birds competed in a race from Ashburton on Thursday last, the distance being 6.8?- miles. The first three birds were: Mr G. Wilce's "Blue Streak," lhr 32min 14sec, 1; Mr C. Butcher's "Young Parker," 2; Mr 0. E. Veitch's "Bolt from the Blue," 3. —Hunting.— The Hunt Club held a meet on Thursday at Mr H. Geaney's at Makikihi. There was a good following of riders and a very successful half day's sport. Mr Geaney extended his usual hospitality to followers, and received the thanks of those present.
