The Oamaru Mail. SATURDAY, MAY 6, 1911.

It is sickening to road that in the midst of the French

The Worst preparations for the; Announcement rescue of French subof a Decade, jects, as well as the subjects of other nations, from the danger of unspeakable treatment at the hands of the fanatical Moors round about Fez, the German Government has calmly notified the French that there must bo uo departure from the Treaty of Algeciras. This is either a rumor worthy of infinite contempt, or a sign that Germany is looking out for pretexts to tear up the arrangement of Alseciras, and ready as well as anxious to draw the sword. We trust the story is nothing hut rumor of the very kind likely to bo current in difficult as the present. It is unthinkable, otherwise. Indeed, it is unthinkable that any nation should take advantage of a moment of another nation's supreme distress to prefer a threat and an insult of bad faith all in the same breath. If any nation had taken the opportunity of the Indian Mutiny to send a threat and an insult to London implying that the greatest fight for existence on record was nothing but a pretext for aggrandisement, all mankind would have risen in righteous wrath of denunciation. We really must discredit tho rumor until wo hear further.

A Willowbridge farmer reports a yield of from 16 to 18 tons of Up-to-Date potatoes to the acre, which were disposed of at slightly higher than current rates. Potatoes generally in the Willowbridge district, it is stated, are but lightly affected with the grub. During the month of April there were slaughtered at the Oamaru Borough abattoirs 100. cattle, 1086 sheep and lambs, four pigs, and one calf, of whicli one sheep was condemned as tinfit for food.

Advice has been received, that the visit of Major-General Godley to Oamaru has been, postponed. At last night's meeting of the Borough Council a letter was read from Colonel Smyth, O.C. Otago Military District, stating that the General would be pleased to meet the Mayor and Councillors, and as many of the leading citizens as could attend. The Mayor, Councillors Ireland, Grave, and Milligan were appointed a committee to make arrangements for General Godley's reception.

Ratepayers and residents who have an idea ,that an asphalt footpath for walking purposes is preferable to a mud pool or a clay bank sometimes go so far as to subscribe, a proportion or the cost in order to gratify their desire for such a footpath. When ratepayers voluntarily contribute a portion of the cost of a public work it would be expected that such work would be carried out expeditiously. - But no. Sometimes ratepayers grow old waiting for the work to be done, and sometimes they ask for 'their money back. Last night an application for a footpath came before | the Council with the requisite accom- j paniment of a deposit. It was resolved j that the work be done "in its order. The bright idea then occurred, to one Councillor that perhaps-the ratepayers made the deposit at this time because they wanted their footpath in the winter. The Mayor remarked that his de-posit-was down two years before the work was done. Councillor Grave thereupon protested against the delaying of these works, and the discouraging of public effort in order that other matters, perhaps of minor importance, might receive attention. After some discussion the Works Committee was entrusted with the task of endeavoring to expedite the work. Miss Phyllis Duncan has been appointed to the position of assistant atthe South School rendered vacant by the resignation of Miss Garry. An offer of £6O per acre, it is stated, w-as recently made for a, small farm at Willowbridge and refused 1 . At the Magistrate's Court this morning Martin Joyce was convicted of drunkenness and fined ss. On-a further charge of committing a grossly mdecent act in a right-of-way leading to Tattersall's auction mart he was found guilty and fined 40s, in default 14 days imprisonment. For. drunkenness in a. railway carriage George Reginald Maitin was fined 10s and ordered to pay -s cab hire. For riding a bicycle on the footpath J. Familton was fined os. A charge against Richard. Sang of riding a bicycle without a light was dismissed, the Magistrate thinking that it was a case of mistaken identity. • At a committee meeting of the Waitaki County Council, held this morning, the following tenders were accepted:— Five Forks bridge—James Sinclair, £1591 7s 6d; Lake Ohan road —\\. Golding. £430 15s; Sailor's CuttingSimpson, £l6l 10s; Fern GullySimpson, £244 2s 6d; Sise's road— Dawson, £43 2s 6d. ■, Messrs X/. E- Haines and J. G. A*men. were last night appointed sinking hinds commissioners in respect of the 1 own Hall loan of £3OOO in place of Mr W. M. Hindmarsh and the late Mr Bul- ( leid.

Willowbridge is not losing its reputa tion as a wheat-growing locality, yields of 70 bushels, to bushels, and Jo? bushels per acre are reported, the latter being the result of a small paddock from which a crop of potatoes had been previously taken. Miss Winsley, who is leaving Oamaru, was last night presented by members of the Hill Tennis Club with a handsome Morroco writing-case. Mr Grenfell in making the presentation roferred to Miss Winslev's good qualities from a playing as well as social point ot view, and," on behalf of the members, wished her every success in her new

surroundings. . Yet again the rumor has arisen that the Hon. T. Y. Duncan does not propose to seek re-election to Parliament this year. Mr Duncan authorises us to contradict this statement most emphatically. "When he intends retiring ho will give the electors ample notice and there jvill be no vague statemeat.

Miss Wilis ley, who has been ten years in the employ oi Messrs Lee, Grave, and Grave, leaves Oamarn on Monday to take up a position with n firm in Hawera. This morning the firm presented. Miss Winslev with a handsome gold watch, suii.'ihiy engraved, expressing their appreciation of Miss Winslev's capable am! faithful service. .Hire Cars from SEA_RLE'S Garage New cars and trustwort-hv drivers. Consignment, to Iand.—SEARLE, sole agent; Oamaru. From the genesis of wooj-growing and exportation the North O'tago clip has held an excellent reputation , ill - .the world's markets'. That this lias survived the passing of the big estate is evident from the fact that Mr C. E. Cholmondeley, of Bainidderyj averaged for a most satisfactory clip the excellent price* of 13d over all.

SO much depends upon your stomach and digestion that it's 'penny wise and; pound foolish to allow that dread malady, Indigestion, to get a. grip on you.
