ALLEGED MISAPPROPRIATION.
FEET/ TO TEMPTATION. (Per Press Association.) Dunedin, April 26. In the Police Court this morning Arthur Robert James Cant, master mariner, who had charge of the 'Union Steam Ship Company's labor department, was charged with stealing-. £llß 17s, the property of the Company. The case showed some remarkable features. It appeared that accused was in 'financial difficulties, and in order to'pay pressing accounts used money which Lad been given him to pay off the crew of- the Koromiko. Detective Ward said that accused called at the polic e station and said he wished to give himself in charge because he had 'stolen! £IOO belonging to the Union Company? Accused' signed a statement and handed witness £l6 odd. Witness and others testified that accused bore an excellent character. Accused's solicitor asked for bail, but the Magistrate indicated that in accordance with the recent direction of a Supreme Court Judge this was not a case in which he would be free to'allow 'bail if accused- pleaded guilty. Ac- , cused then reserved his defence and was ' committed for trial, bail being allowed.
