Aitken again wrote enquiring when the work of increasing the size of the water main in Exe street would be proceeded with. —It was resolved to reply that the Committee is considering the question of giving a more effective supply. J. D. Familton, treasurer to the Clrarcli of Christ Trustees, wrote asking for a rebate of rates, £2 18s 6d, on section 16, block 7, on which the Church of Christ has been erected.—Resolved to.reply that the Council has no power to grant a rebate. J. Treloar requested permission to erect a barber's pole with his name attached thereto on his shop in "Wear street.—Permission granted, subject to work being done in accordance with the by-laws and with the approval of the Engineer. A. M'Donald applied for a picturelia.ll license lor that building known as Lintott's Store, sections 9 and 10, H.B.P. (Tyne street). The building: was of stone, with an iron roof. Mr M'Donald also applied for a 10 h.p. Pelton wheel. Enclosed was a certificate from SuperI intendent James stating that the building was well adapted for the purposes of a picture hall. With respect to the request for a license, it was resolved that Mr M'Donald be informed that the Council will be prepared to grant him a license provided he complies with such requirements as the Works Committee thinks fit to impose to safeguard the public. The request for power for a Pelton wheel was referred to the Waterworks Committee with power to act. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee accounts amounting to £287 4s were passed for payment, The Waterworks Committee reported that a domestic supply had been granted' to Captain Turpie, New- • borough, at £5 per annum.—The report was adopted. Rebates of rates were applied for by Haddeu Dennison, as agent for Mr Neil C. Gilchrist, on shop on part section 5, block 3, Tyne street, and by the same, as agent for Mr Win. Milne, on shop oil part section 1.3, block 26.

Mr Rule certifying that the shops had been unoccupied, the rebates were granted.

Building permits were granted as follows: Thos. Harris and Soil, fiveroomed house in wood and iron on section 6, block 9, Torridge street; J. M. Forrester, picture hall in stone for Haywards Picture Enterprises, Ltd.; M. Simpson, dwelling in wood and iron nil part sections 2& and 20, block 96. Tweed street. -
