WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

At yesterday's meeting of the "\\ illtaki County Council the Engineer's report was read and dealt with as follows : "1. The Otekaike Pass track is as it always has been a poor bridle, track, with'several pieces difficult at all times and dangerous in bad weather: The worst piece is at the hanging rock, near the boundary between runs 28e and 28d. It there runs under an overhanging rock with barely enough room for a pack horse, with a perpendicular drop below. Some years ago there was an extensive slip blocking the track and the rock above the track for a long way back is now so shaken and loose that an enormous quantity would have to be removed before any widening could he done. A track could be formed on the opposite side of the stream, but it involves heavy work,, extending over about half a mile. I would recommend that this deviation be made. There are several other places where the track is too steep ana narrow, so that packing in frosty weather is almost impossible. They could be greatly improved at a cost of about £2OO. In making any extensive improvements on this track it should, where possible, be put on a line suitable for a light traffic road, as this will soon be necessary. A light traffic road should be made at once, to give access to the top of _ the Otekaike Valley from Danscy's. Pass road."—lt was decided that application be made to the Government for the £SOO allocated for expenditure on those roads, and that in the meantime the light traffic road be formed. "2. I would recommend that maintenance gravel be got for the following roads in the Otcpopo Riding:—(a) ftKJ cubic vards for the Bowally road, in) 400 cubic yards for the Woodburn road, (c) 300 cubic yards for Findlayson's

road." —Held over. "3. 1 would recommend that the mi- ! gravelled portion of the Maheno-Allday Ray road west of the Happy Valley road be gravelled."—Held over. "4. i have laid off the road through K.R. section 23, block V, Macrewhcnna Survey District, to connect the Duntroon' racecourse road with Stringer's road. Cost of formation will be trifling, but 31 chains of fencing will be re quired. Mr Pringle offers to do the fencing at 10s per chain, including gates, and I think this offer should be accented."—Mr Pringle's offer was :<- ceptcd. "5. I have arranged with )lr O'.nwick, whose resignation was received ;)t last meeting, to remain on a few w<<ks longer. He wishes to retire jit or-ee on account of his health, but > il! f-i.d a substitute if necessary. Mr Ross, now in Ahuriri, will then take his place, and another man will be wanted there." —Adopted. In reference to Mr Warwick's retirement, the Chairman said lie did not think the Council ever had a more trustworthy servant.
