WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the AYaitaki County Council was held this morning. Present: Messrs D. Sutherland (Chairman), Nicolson, Borrie, Newlauds, Oats, Dovev, and Wvlie. Accounts to the amount of £1299 19s 6d (general* account) and £l6 19s (PapakaTo water-race account)were passed for payment. Mr LeCren waited on the Council in regard to the making of railway crossings at Kartigi. As the Department would not allow two crossings, he asked if the Council would rescind their previous resolution and ask for one. He also did not see the need for cattle'stops, etc., required by the Department. On the motion of Mr Nicolson, seconded by Mr Wylie, the former resolution, was rescinded, and it was resolved that one crossing be" made 'at the point indicated. A Treasury voucher was received for the sum of *£37l 16s 4d; made up as follows: —Material for Kauroo River stock bridge £237 9s 4d, formation Ahuriri Gorge track .£IOO, labor at St. Bathans to Hawkden bridle-track, £36 7s. —Received.

John Kydd, Ngapara, asked to be relieved of his duties as pound-keeper, as he had sold his property and the ground on which the pound was situated to Messrs Morrison Bros. Mr Kydd's. resignation was accepted and it was resolved to appoint one of the Morrison Bros; as his successor.

Telegrams were received from Sir Joseph Ward in reference to the celebration of Dominion Day.—Received. The Public Works Department called the attention of the Council to the fact that proposals for the expenditure of tlie available balances on votes for certain road, etc., works within the district had not yet been submitted. In a further letter the Department inquired whether it was desired that the amount available for Hoathfield to Allandale Coal Pit (£200) should be offered to the Waihemo County Council, or whether the Waitaki Council proposed to adjust matters with that county. A later letter notified that the grant of £7B for expenditure in tiie Moeraki Native Reserve would be (authorised for expenditure by the district engineer.—Received. The Clerk replied that- the matter had been attended to. , , ~. , The District Engineer, Public Works Department, inquired regarding the state of various works in progress and Hearing completion in the county. —Information supplied. , Mr F. W. Onglev, solicitor, notified that Messrs Naish Bros, had sold portion of allotment 11. township of Newborough, and required certificate for the Lands Department as to the satisfactory formation of the adjoining streets. —The letter was received, and. tiie certificate signed. The Public Works Department authorised the expenditure of £2OO on the Ardgowan road. —Received, Ruddenklan and Co. requested permission to erect telephone poles on the main road from Peebles to their Awamoko property, about 2i miles.—The matter was referred to the Engineer with power to act. The Secretary of the Waitaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board notified that a supplementary contribution might be required of the County in respect of the proposed expenditure of £263 on alterations and improvements to the infections diseases ward of the hospital.—Received. 'lho '.Taranaki County Council requested the support of the Council in endeavoring to have the By-laws Bill passed this session.—Consideration deferred for one month. C. S. Dalgleish, Inspector of Noxious Weeds, etc., requested the Council to clear the gorse from the old railway lino leading from Hillgrove to Port Aloeraki. The Council resolved to decline responsibility, it being pointed out that the noxious weeds were on railway property. The Department of Lands and Survey forwarded a statement of "thirds" (£5 Is 8d) and "fourths" (Cl 6 5s 7d) for the period 1 5 10 to 30 7 10. and asked that details of proposed expenditure bo supplied. it was resolved that the Chairman

Tlie Oamaru Borough Council applied

for leave to lay a gas service pipe nil the Awamoa road to connect with Air W. H. Paterson's house. —Application granted., -.ie work to be done to the satisfaction of the engineer.

.J. Al. Goulding wrote offering to take over the contracts held by his father. J. D. Colliding. It was resolved, that steps be taken to determine J. D. Gouiding's contract. Fifteen residents of Windsor Park and Phuiket Settlement petitioned the Council to grade an'd widen the steep pinch at Air Robert Turnbull's and put a little, gravel on the road known as Tussoeky road, so that a horse could get a hold in wet weather. Alessrs M'Randall and Baxter personally waited on the Council to support the application, and emphasised the urgency of the work. It was decided that the Engineer he asked to report on tho work asked for and "the probable cost at next meeting of the Council.

Graham Bros., having sold their farm at Otepopo, asked the Council to let them have a cheque for £3O, the amount of grant promised them through the Engineer and Air Wylie towards the cost of road formation at Glencoe.

Hew M'Kellar, Otekaike, wroto in reference to the road leading to his property from the Otiake Creek crossing opposite Mr George Grant's. He stated that very little had been done to this road during his two years' occupation of the property.—The Engineer to report at next meeting. John P. Puttick, Waiarcka Junction, drew attention to the. had state of a narrow track leading from Upper Chelmers street to the railway crossing leading to his house.'—The matter was referred to the Engineer. James Garrow and Sons drew attention "to the present danger and prospective risk to stock, especially sheep and lambs," owing to Oamaru Creek water at the several crossings on the Government settlers' new road intersecting their laud being 'dammed back by the road crossings. They suggested that either bridges should be erected or pipes and culverts laid down.—The. matter was referred to the Engineer. . S. C. Watson, Windsor, enclosed account for half-cost of road fencing and asked the Council to do : what formation was necessary.—Referred to tho Engineer.

Nine residents from the front and back blocks of Totara Settlement called attention to the impassable condition of the road from Kiely's to the Waiareka Creek in wet weather. Milkcarts which took that road became very muddy and unfit to go to the creamery. —Left to the Engineer and member of the riding to report at next meeting.- - J. 1204 (gravel for main Upper ■ Waitaki road), Air William Gardiner wrote suggesting that a better clas sof gravel reused than what has formerly been spread on the main road. The main road from Pukeuri to Georgetown was, he considered, a standing disgrace, and it was high time that some improvement, was shown.

The following tenders were accepted: —Formation and gravelling on Airedale and Oamaru Creek roads, C. R. Hood, jun., £316 7s 6d; gravel for Eden street Extension, Homestead, and Devil's Creek roads, J. Mansell. £lB2 10s; gravel for Alain Upper Waitaki road, W. Dalgleish, £350. No tender was received for culvert on Hedley's road, and it was decided to call for fresh tenders for next meeting, , „
