WATERSiQE WORKERS. (Per Press Association.) (Abridged Press Association Report.) At the amUial conference of the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Federation continued at Cliristchurch on Monday resolutions were adopted to the following effect:— That members of one union should not work at other ports where a union exists. That any member of a. union leaving unfinancial or not being of good character should not be received as a. member of another union until lie "clears his indebtedness or liis .character, bs the case may be.

That no ship should employ less than four men to work in any gang, and two men in a bunker. That the conference should adopt the objective and platform of the New Zealand Labor Party. That the Arbitration Act be amended to allow Commissioners of Conciliation to make an award for not less than three months. That all the owners of shops and factories be required to cease work at the appointed' time, emergencies to be provided for by permit. That apart from awards (which may omit the point) a. weekly half-holiday be observed by all shops and factories for male and female workers alike.

That the law be amended to permit of Union funds being used for political purpose. (This was opposed, but a proposal for a referendum of Unions was defeated by 19 to 4.) That the Compensation Act should he amended to' provide for payment to a disabled worker till he is able to follow his usual occupation, and to provide in this connection, that "worker" shall mean anyone earning not more than £6 per week. That the waterside workers casually employed by the port be subject to any award affecting private employers. That to ensure a reasonable prospect of success at the parliamentary and other' elections for the various Labor candidates, this conference holds that all such candidates should and 1 must be selected in the most democratic manner, and their political soundness ascertained before their candidature is announced to the public whether through the Press or otherwise.
