OAM ARU JOCKEY CLUB.

NOTES OF THE HANDICAPS. Writing in the Otago Daily Times concerning the prospects of tlic various entrants at the Oamaru meeting, Sentry says: The handicaps for the North Otago Jockey Club's meeting have made their appearance, and Oiyoi is at the post of honour in the Oamaru Cup with 9.9 opposite liis name. The distance is a couple of furlongs shorter than the Timaru Cup, in which the Stcpniak gelding dcadlieated with Tikitere, but the curtailment of the distance is rather against the top weight, as he is not a particularly quick beginner. At Timaru Oiyoi was conceding 181b to Tikitere, and now there is a similar margin between them, albeit at a slightly higher scale. My Lawyer, who displayed such greatly improved form at the South Canterbury meeting, is in receipt of lib from Tikitere. When, they last met both were beaten by Silkweb, and there, was a length between the Dunedin horse and Tikitere, the latter conceding the former 31b. Sir George Clifford is represented by Kilwinning 8.12 and Sharpshooter 8.4,- and Paragon, who won over nine furlongs at the subsequently abandoned C.R.C. meeting, now meets Tikitere, who finished second to him, oil about the same terms over a furlong less ground. St. Aidan has been allotted 8.2, and is not harshly treated' at the burden. He won nicely over seven furlongs at Waimate, but apparently got a bad passage in his only race at the South Canterbury meeting. As a three-year-old St. Aidan was second to Husbandman in the C.J.C. Derby, and if he is back to form should get amongst the winners before the season closes. Cronstadt displayed good form at the Dunedin. Cup meeting, and subsequently ran a good horse in the Final Handicap at Riccarton when carrying 8.2 into third place behind' Lovelorn and _ Kilwinning. He now meets Kilwinning on 51b better, terms. Genius won the Autumn Plate in good style, and Rose Noble ran a meritorious second in both the Courtenay Welter and the Yaldhurst Welter. Waiju goes up '7lb on the burden he carried unplaced in the Timaru Cup (in which 4Alb overweight wais posted), but he won in excellent style on the second day, when he carried off the Seadown Welter. Apart from the question of his handicap, Waiju could probably Be better ridden by a 7.7 boy than by a featherweight, and up to a mile in the Timafu Cup he was travelling well and apparently better than Silkweb, ' who won the principal race on the second day. King Try has useful form on. the West Coast to recommend him, and Silkweb is in receipt of 21b from Waiju, or on 21b better terms than when they met at Timaru. Lovelorn goes up from the 6.12 she carried in the Final Handicap to 7.4, and Cute performs so well over six furlongs with fair weights that she should be dangerous over a mile at 7.3. She is generally a good finisher, and is perhaps a better mare than is generally supposed. The others who follow have easy burdens, and a brief analvsis of the figures suggests that there should be a good acceptance for the race. Acceptances for the first day's handicaps, together with entries for the Trial and Shorts, are due on Thursday of this week.

NAMING A RACEHORSE.

Tho name Contralto having already been claimed, tho owner of the chestnut mare by Obligado—Miss Ottley has altered the name of this filly to Alto, which has been registered, iklto is engaged to compete at the forthcoming meeting of the North Otago Jockey Club.

IMPROVEMENTS AT THE RACECOURSE.

Patrons of the Norj:h Otago Jockey Club who have in the past suffered the inconveniences attendant upon the inadequate catering arrangements will rejoice to hear that, at the forthcoming and all future meetings refreshments will be supplied in a commodious diningroom, the erection of which was recently completed. The new building occupies a position on the south side of tho grandstand, and is situated in tho carriage paddock. It is built of Oamaru stone, and contains three rooms —a kitchen (20ft x 12ft), a, members' luncheon room (20ft x 15ft Gin), and a public luncheon room (28ft x 27ft Gin). Tho kitchen is fitted with a large range, shelving, and other appurtenances, and should greatly facilitate the work of tho Club's caterers.

The new building, it may be mentioned, is largely the gift of Mr J. M. Buckley, the President of the North Otago Jockey Club. Other improvements that have been made are the erection of a post and rail- fence in front of the loose. boxes, while the fence on the southern boundary of the enclosure has been shifted further back to allow of the erection of ihe dining-rooms. A special gate, too, has been erected for the admittance of horses to the saddling paddock enclosure. The erection of the new buildings and improvements were carried o-.it by Messrs Familton Bros, to plans prepared by Mr J. M. Forrester.

A REMINDER.

Owners are reminded that acceptances for the first day of the North Otago Jockey Club's whiter meeting close to-night at 9 o'clock, as also do entries for tho Trial Plate and The Shorts.
