THE ROYAL WELSH MALE CHOIR.
.Speaking of the initial Melbourne concert bv the renowned choristers, who Lin' to appear at the .Municipal Opera J louse on Friday next, under the direction, of J. and X. "fait, the -Age remarked : —"lt is slid that there are in London more Irishmen than in Dublin, more Scotsmen than i in Edinburgh, and more Welshmen than lin Wales. How many Welshmen there ! niav be in Melbourne we do not venture i to surmise: but they are here in pleuty I to provide a nucleus for an audience any dav of the week to welcome and acclaim I cur latest visitors, the Royal Welsh Choir. i Lacking up the local Welshmen are the j members of our liedertafel, our various j choral societies, ami our church choirs, all I of whom want to hear and know the latest ! developments of the art they cherish ; !no cause for wonder, then, that in fiyd- | ney and Brisbane already, and now in j Melbourne,, organisation should find ready and warm support and encouragement. They richly deserve this support, and all that"they can persuade the genera! public to give them to boot, for-they are undoubtedly a well-balanced chorus; and sing their "parts as if from conviction. The- conductor. Mr \V. Thomas, is evidently an old hand at the game; it is a treat" to see him exert his sovereignty. He wields his baton with the ease which comes from a certainty that all his indications are in a fair way of being obeyed oven before lie has given them. He is clearly an enthusiast, right down, to the point' of his wand; and as a general thing, lie joins in the singing himself. I as though a member of the choir he so j ably directs." The choir as a whole is thoroughly effi- | cient; the balance of the several parts ! is most satisfactory, and every attention !is paid to point of light and shade. Mr Trevor Lewis and Mr E. Edwards, the baritones, and Mr Todd Jones, 'tne tenor, ail covered themselves with glory in solo ■work, and a quartet by "The Royal Singers" merits special commendation. In truth, this Welsh chair is a most capable body of s.ingers, and none who ta.ke an interest in choral singing in its highest and more perfect manifestations can afford to miss hearing it. Prices 03, 3s 2s". Seats may be booked, and 3s day sales secured from this morning at the "Dresden.
