LOCAL MARKETS. Mail Office, Monday afternoon. The holidays over, merchants and millers have settled down ag:hi; and there was more inquiry for wheat than prevailed at the close of last year, resulting in a number of transactions. Of these the most important was a line of about 2500 sacks of mixed redchaff and velvet, chiefly the former, which brought 4s 6d, less commission, ex store. Another line of velvet of. bulky dimensions changed hands at 4s sfl net," at store, wxnle smaller lines brought from 4s 4d to 4s at country stations. Dunidin millers show no eagerness to share in these transactions, being satisfied that the purchase of wheat from Australia is a better proposition under the oxevailing circumstances. A slight rise tn price is reported from the other side, but whether this will prove sufficient to check importations or whether it will be maintained is still problematical. There appears hj& solid basis for an increase in London advices, and it would seem more than likely that the rise is consequent rather upon a temporarily increased demand to fill cargoes. The sales of oats reported are to very small lines. They want very little in the North, and their business is from hand to mouth, operations bein? carried on in fifly sack lots. Oats are selling at Is 9d to Is f.o.b., s.i., for Gaxtons and Duns, and Is 8d for light Danish. The potato market has been materially affected by the increased digaing, and erowers have now to be satisfied with £5 to £6 10s.

DTHSTEDIN" MARKETS. Messrs T. EL. Shiel and Co. report for week ending 9th January : Potatoes.—New season's potatoes are now coming in freely to this market, and unfortunately owing to the Kght prices of Auckland potatoes there has been con sidcrable competition in prices.
