The land will be cut- up into dairy farms. The price is about £3 per acre. Dredging : Kohikohi dredge 220z 7dwts; Takaka Sluicing Company, 540z for 14 days. A native meeting, held at Parerora. near Patea, this week, decided to arrange for presenting a 'testimonial to Mr Carroll as from the whole of the natives of the colony. The testimonial will bake the, form of a purse of sovereigns. At the 'Magistrate's Court the inquest on the fire at tihe Black Horse Hotel was held this morning. Insurance claims had been niad'e for £650. Nellie Griffin, servant at the hotel, said Mrs Snooks, owner of the hotel, went away to Wellington just after she bought the hotel, eight months ago. She was away three weeks, and took silver plate with her. On her return from WeL lington sacks containing dressmaking things were sent away from the hotel. Mir-s Snooks paid another visib to Wellington, leaving the house at twenty minutes past eight 011 the night of the fire. A few days before she left she told witness that if anything occurred in thie way of "fire to escape by the window. There was heavy rain in parts of North Canterbury 011 Thursday nighb, and the rivers are in flood. Some damage has been done to low-lying farms. A private movement originated about two weeks ago for the purpose of presenting Bishop Cowie with a purse of sovereigns on the 23rd anniversary of his consecration on the 29th instant, and it has met with considerable success. The resignation of the Bishop alters the condition ot affairs, and the committee has decided to make the movement a public one. The presentation is to be to the Bishop and Mrs Cowie. Bishop Cowie's resignation is to bake place in .September. £3OO has already been collected privately for the presentation. PALMERSTON NORTH. June 13. It has been raining hard here for the last 24 hours- and there is no sign of a break. At 11 p. mi. all the local streams were flooded. The Manawatu River is within a foot of the Easter flood of 1897. The country districts all report inundations. The Pohangina River ds also in very high flood. No particulars of any damage have yet reached here, but the flood must prove serious in the lower Manawatu. No interference with railway traffic in this disitridb Avas reported to-day.
