QUEEN WILHELMINA.

A pretty story is being told of the young Queen of tlie Netherlands (says a Home paper). Saturday was the .birthday of the Prince Consort, amd a feast had been arranged to celebrate the occasion. Of course, this had to be abandoned, but tihe kindly inst-inot of cite Royal invalid would not allow tihe disappointment to apply to some of her favorites. It did not matter to tihe distinguished functionaries of the Court, butthere were otlhters to whom the upset of the arrangements would be little short of tragic. These were the children of certain humble retainers about the Court-. And for these special cakes were baked by the Queen's orders. A world of kindliness is expressed in that little action. Her charming disposition endears to all who have had opportunities -of witnessing its -manifestations. She has had many lovers, among them susceptible young men not unknown in distinguished society in England. ' Before her marriage she was pestered by the attentions of infatuated young men. She has an eye for -the humorous side of sentiment, as she has for the practical. The honest, loving tribute of the fisherman who sent her the first hertring of the season's catch she promptly cooked aind ate ; the love-missives of the impertinent s'hie probably used as fuel for the herring. Queen Wilhelmina is always frankly anxious about the appearance she should present to Iher people. The stamps issued upon her attainment of her regal she disliked because they made her look "ten years too old"—an inversion of the protest she uttered against the stamps issued during heir early girlhood. „ She lhad both issues cancelled. She was not less frank with the photographer a couple of yeans ago. 'T want you to take me very nicely indeed. So many of my subjects have never had a peep at me; and as they will judge me by my portrait, I want to look very grand. Such engaging candour was not lost upon the anxious -photographer, who elicited the fact that he must be .very careful to do lull justice to a new bonnet which the Queen was wearing. "I will try my best to look 'queenly,"' she promised as she posed "but, 0 dear ! my boots pdnoh me terribly. Now that Queen Victoria is dead, Queen Wilhelmina is the only Queen in Europe, and the only woman on a, "throne, if we except- the remarkable lady of Pekin, who has somehow managed to t/um half Asia upside down.
