Waitaki Charitable Aid Board.

The adjourned meeting of the Charitable Aid Board was held to-day, when there were present —Messrs J. M. Brown (chair), Wylie, Borrie, Hall, Hedley, and Lee. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Wylie, thae in future the quarterly meetings be ordered to be called on the second Wednesday of the month. A discussion arose upon the question of the possibility of setting maintenance contributions from the putative fathers of some of the children cast by the Magistrate's Court upon charitable aid, and it was thought that something should be done by way of moving the Court in the matter.

The Secretary reported that he had written asking for particulars from the Benevolent Society of cases which would be affected by the Pensions Act, but had received no reply so far. Xt was suggested that it would be as well not to pass any money until the return was received. A similar omission was urged against the Sergeant of Police, who had also been asked to make a return.

The Chairman said that the Secretary should tell the Sergeant that a reply was required. As the reading of the correspondence proceeded there was another unanswered letter, and

Mr Hedley moved that Sergt. O'Grady be informed that the Board expects an answer to the letters sent to him.

This was seconded by Mr Hall and carried.

The balance-sheet was read, and showed expenditure to he: North Otago Benevolent Society LI4OO, Caversham Industrial School L 249 9s lid, St. Mary's Industrial School L6O 18s, Education Department T.gt 2s 6d, and expenses of management L 23 Is 8d ; total L 1754 12a Id. Mr Lee Jpolnted oat a case where 'fte Coarc had ordered the parents to pay a certain amount, bat the money bad not been paid. He wanted to know whose daty It was to see the orders enforced. It did not appear that the police attended to It. The Benevolent Society or the Industrial School authorities did not, and if the Board did not, whose duty was it ? He thought the Board should exercise this function, and he moved that a committee consisting of his Worship the Mayor, Mr Borrie, and the mover (convener) be appointed to go into the matter and report.

Mr Hedley seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. The formal resolution tor the requisition of the funds from the different bodies was passed, on the motion of Mr Borrie, seconded by Mr Hall. The accounts, amounting to L 236 9a, were passed. Mr Hedley was re-appointed treasurer for the ensuing year. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the business before the meeting.
