(BY TELEGRAPH.) (PER PKTSSS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. September 24. The marble obelisk which the Government has undertaken to place over the grave of the late M&jor Ropata is completed, and will be shipped to Port Awanui, East Coast, in a few days. The monument is about 10ft high, and bears the following inscription : s- acred to the memory of Major Ropata, Whahewe, of the Great Ngatlporou tribe, who died lsb July, 1897, aged about 80 years : a soldier and a man. This stone was erected by the Government of Now Zealand as a mark of regard for one who served his country well." September-26. The Teachers' Institute is protesting against the conditions under which cooking has been introduced in Wellington schools. They do not object to cooking itself, bub they urge that the syllabus already contains too many subjeots for the tliiae at their disposal, and every new one means that the rest must suffer. They claim that the position is impossible, and must do harm. The Miowera with the London mails of September 10. left Victoria on September 23, due date. TIMARU. September 24. The Opuha estate, comprising 4900 acres, with sheep, horses, etc., was sold by auction to-day for L 21.500. Mr Lysacht, of Hawera, was the purchaser.
