Cycling Road Race
A road race under the auspices of the North Otago Cycling Club was run yesterday afternoon. As. this race had created no little amount of excitement in cycling circles for some little time past there was quite a large crowd gathered in Thames street to witness the contest. The race was from the Post Office to Mr Borrie's gate.and back. The handicap was allowed at tlie starting poinr. The Club wish to thank Mr Buland, who gave the men their tickets at Mr Borrie's gate, and Mr O. R. Wise, who acted as starter and timekeeper. The following is the position of the competitors at the finish : A. Dalgleisb, 3imin t J. Gibson, 4-jmin + A. Maxwell, smin .... ... 3 W. Brown, 3min ..- 4 A. W. Humphries, scr .... ... 5 J. Smith (simin), D. Lowry (6min), J. Cambridge (6miu), H. Booth (7min), R. Marsh (7min), P. W. Barker (Saec), and P. Piper also competed. The race was a good one from start to finish, good times being made. Maxwell finished nearly 100 yards behind the two first men, who rode a neck and neck race. Humphries, who finished the freshest of all, rode a splendid race throughout. Piper had a mishap, having ridden over two dogs, and arrived at the winning post showing signs of his being in trouble. Brown ... ... ... 61 7 A trophy, of a set of carvers, was , given by Mr C. W. Cooke, local agent for . the Massey-Harris Company, goes to A. Dalgleish. A protest has been entered against i the winner on the ground that he was paced part of the way, a horse set tlie pace for another, and one rider used a j machine that was under weight.
