The Age, in referring to what it characterises as the monopoly proposed to be created in New Guinea for a British landbooming syndicate, says ib is outrageous. The fate of Australia may be involved in what on the face of It appears to be merely a smart business deal. The paper strongly animadverts on Sir William Macgregor's action in refusing previous applications by Mr Theodore Bevan, an Australian syndicate, than preferring a policy in favor of a mysterious British syndicate. It severely condemns Sir D. Gillies', a Victorian ex-Premier, for joining a directorate which proposes to exploit Australian territory, and accuses him of wanting to imitate Mr Cecil Rhodes in the Jameson raid. It urges Premier Turner to lose no time in taking steps to have this preposterous grab defeated, or withdraw Victoria's New Guinea subsidy. Recei% r ed May 19, at 0.20 a.m. Sydney, May 18. The brigantine Lady Robinson, which left Clarence River on April 29th. bound to Westport, timber laden, has been picked up by a tug, having lost her rudder. She has beea towed to Newcastle. The Bank of New South Wales pays a dividend at the rate of 9 per cent per annum. There was a net profit for the half-year of LBB.OOO. The report of the committee appointed bo inquire into the cost of federation estimates the Customs revenue required to enable the Commonwealth to place all the States in a position to meeb their financial requirements to be eleven millions, and if Westralia be excluded eight millions will suffice. The Committee considers that even that small sum will be an impracticable and inadvisable one to raise by Customs duties. A minority-re-port considers that many of the estimates are excessive; also, that the assumed ratio of imports by New South Wales under a uniform tariff is one of a more or less speculative character, and that in a very short time New South Wales and Victoria must approximate to a per capita basis. Received May 19, at 10 a.m. Sydney, May 18. The brigantine Lady Robinson had a terrible experience. For 12 days she was battered about at the mercy of- the waves, being dismasted and leaking badly. The crew were worn out with pumping, and had to crowd into a' cabin Bfb square. They were also short of food. Received May 19, at 11.30 a.m. Sydney, May 19. The Sydney Morning Herald considers that the Finance Committee's report has considerably reduced the force of alarmist forecasts as to the prohibitive cost of federation. Ib estimates the extra cost involved to New South Wales to be 3s 6d per head of population.
