Annie Gillies, aced 24, daughter cf_a sheep farmer at To Horo, was drowned in the Otaki River by her horse_f a .ll:ng. At the Wairarapa licencing election Messrs Bunny, Donald, Stevens. Miller, and Skey were elected. The Premier left this afternoon to attend Mr Hall's banquet at Dmevirke. The Maori contingent £jr Ens-land will be drilled here. Mr Cohen, in a valedictory address at the Education Board, urcred that Boards should be entrusted with the enforcement of the compulsory clauses, and advocated the Board supplying readers and text books to Committees at prime cost, as a first step towards providing free text books, which should then belong to the schools. He counselled the Minister convening, durincr the recess, a Conference of Boards over which he should himself preside, with a view to the introduction of legislation making the system truly national, and making amendments proved to be necessary by pa.st experience. Mrs Seddon arrived to-day. She was welcomed by local members of the Women's Social and Political League. Mrs Seddon. acknowledging the welcome, apolosised for the absence of the Premier and said i tfc Owin2 to the Hon. Mr M Ivensie's ill health and the necessity for dealing this week with the question of Mr Seddon's going home, he could not, much to his resret, come to day."
