Received January 18, at 9.35 p.m. Rome, January 17. Senator John Sherman does not approve of American intervention in the affairs of Cuba. Sofia, January 17. Tusekschieffa, sentenced to three years for complicity in the murder of Stambouloff, has been liberated on bail of the amount of 25,000 francs. St. Petersburg, January 17. A number of Russian doctors have been sent to the Russian guard posts on the Persian frontier to watch the progress of the bubonic plague now ravaging India. Received January 18, at 9.40 p.m. London, January 17. The Midland Railway Company have decided to greatly reduce the working hours of their shunters and guards. Father Brown, speaking at a meeting of the Catholic League, referred to Mr Balfour's statement that it was nob the intention of the Government to bring forward a proposal for a rate in aid of public schools, and advocated a no-rate agitation. Received January 19, at 12 20. a m. Washington, January 18. Mr Smalley, the New York correspondent of the London Times, says that President M'Kinley's selection of Senator Sherman as secretary of State is much criticised, and he considers it indicates that the President is forming a mediocre Cabinet. He adds that Senator Sherman's somersault in regard to non-inter-vention in Cuba will result in pressure being brought to bear on him by Major M'Kinley. A fire occurrsd at Buckner's Orphan* age, Dallas, Texas, and 15 girls were burned to death. Ottawa, January 18. M. Laurier, Premier of Canada, states that if the American Congress passes the Alien Labor Bill Canada will adopt retaliatory measures. Great preparations are being made in Canada to celebrate the anniversary of the sixtieth year of the Queen's reign. Cairo, January 18.
It is reported from Massowah that Dervishes are rapidly advancing in a largo force upon Aeovdat. St. Petekseukc, January 18.
The is suffering from osseous growth of the cranium, -which is causing a severe attack of vertigo. The growth is supposed to be the result of a wound received at Otsu, Japan, during his travels in that country as Czarewitch in 1891. During his visit to the threatve on May 11th a fanatical Japanese officer fired at him. The Czar is also at present suffering from overwork. Professor Bergmann, eminent surgeon, is shortly to perform an operation for the removal of the growth.
