Nominations for the Federal candidates require to be lodged by February lltb. The election will take place oi the 4th of March. The Convention will meet on the 29th March. The place of meeting will be fixed at the Premiers' Conference at Hobart. It is understood that Sydney will be chosen. Sydney. January 19. Mr Gould, Minister of Justice, is a passenger by the Alameda last night, on toar through New Zealand. Very cold weather has been experienced here. The temperature at daybreak was within 12deg. of freezing point. A heavy easterly sea setting in Indicates bad weather between, here and New Zealand.
Cardinal Moran, whom the public were led to believe would be a candidate at the Federal Convention has returned an evasive answer to an Interviewer. The idea that the Cardinal wonld stand has occasioned a controversy which culminated in the Primate's emphatic "No" when asked whether ho would become a candidate. Cardinal Moran now states that he had not thought- seriously about it, but: had merely said that there was nothing to prevent him being nominated. Perth, January 19.
An important discovery has been made at Lake Lefroy, Coolgardie. A large formation was found, out-cropping 20ft at the width of 50ft, carrying coarse gold throughout the width. Adelaide. January 19.
A party of prospectors have returned from the Interior of Kangaroo Island with beautiful specimens of rubies, garnets, topaz, sapphires, and splendid diamonds. Perth, January 19. A disastrous fire occurred in Bayley street. Coolpardie. Five premises were destroyed. The damage is estimated at L 20.000. Bp.tsba-ve, January 19. The voting for the Queensland Methodist Union is completed. Three thousand and fifty-six votes for Union and 516 against. Received January 19, at 11.30 a.m. SvDJfEV, January 19. A large fire broke out at S this morning at the Eagle Tobacco Company's Stores and Factory, Clarence street. The building of four storeys extends through to Kent street, and is situated in a rather densely-built block. The fire originated in the factory in Kent street, which was speedily demolished. It spread to the Clarence street frontage, gutting the three upper storeys. The brigade have now (9.30 a.m.) got the fire in hand, and it is unlikely to spread to the adjoining warehouses.
