The Story of Senator Mrs Cannon.

According to the £cho, ** a remarkable election recently took place in the State of Utah, tihere a lady fought against her husband for the office of State Senator, and was elected by a majority of over 4000 votes. The husband was a Republican, the wife of a Democrat, and in spite of their political rivalry they are both on the best of terms. Mr Cannon, the defeated candidate, is a leading elder of the Mormon Church, and has foui wives living in neighborly communion. The particular wife who fought against him is also an enthusiastic Mormon, and jnaintains herself by working as a pbyoidan. Utah has female suffrage, 60 per cent, of the voter are women, and, in the ordinary course of things, Mrs Cannon found herself taking part in political affairs. She learnt that on some points she differed from her husband, and so they agreed to go their own way politically, without disturbance to their domestic relationships. 'lf a woman quarrels with her husband over politics she'd quarrel with him as to whether he liked raised bread or biscuits, or any other subject that cams handy," Mrs Cannon declares. Both husband and wife took parts in the affairs of their own parties, and when nomination day came round the husband found himself selected by the Republicans, and wife by the Democrats as their candidates. Mis Cannon becomes the first woman ever chosen State Senator in America."
