The city newspapers almost unanimously approve of the nomination of Chief Justice Way, of South Australia, to a seat on the judicial committee of the Privy Council. H.M. sloop Torch rolieves the Ringdove on the Australian station. The Torch was built in 1894, and carries six 25-pounders, four 3-pounders, and two machine guns. She has a displacement of 960 tons, and steams 13 knots. Calcutta. January 14. The bubonic plague has now reached Poonah, in the Bombay district. Received January 15, at 9.10 p.m. Tokio, January 14. Miss Jacobs has been arrested on a charge of the murder of Mr Carew at Yokohama. The prisoner denies having confessed the crime. Washington, January 14. It is understood that Senator Sherwin will become Secretary of State in tho M'Kinley administration. Calcutta, January 14. A party of Danish officers exploring the Pamir plateau discovered a tribe of pigmies devoted to sun worship. The cattle and other animals of these strange people were also of a diminutive character.
