SPECIAL TELEGRAMS.

(from our own correspondent.) (BY TELEGRAPH.) Wellington, December 18. The recent decision of the Chiof Justice in the Horowhenua Block case is_ boing made the subject of severe strictures against the Government by the Post. In the course of an article in this evening's issue it is alleged that the Government do not stand much chance of getting valuo for the L2OOO paid to Warena Hunia, one of the trustees for the native owners. This is, however, quito incorrect, as this sum may bo viewed as representing Hunia's share, and all that is necessary is to individualise tho titles of the several owners, when tho remaining L4OOO, which has not yet been paid, can be allocated to them. Tho land already acquired by tho Government includes the State Farm at Levin, and also sections which have been taken up by a number of settlers. The amount of rent received from these settlers, it is understood, would be about sufliciont to pay interest on the purchase money of the whole block. The Government's title is perfectly sound and there is no likelihood of a hitch occurring, as tho Post alleges, whereby tho Government will lose tho amount already paid on account of tho purchase. The Lands' Purchase Board have recommended the purcliaso of 100 acres of land near Kurow, belonging to MrStringer, and the Government have decided to offer the price named by the Board. In order to bring the timbers of tho colony prominently before consumers in Europe the Government have decided to send a log of each timber, to be selected and worked by a timber export, to Genoa Industrial Exhibition. December 19. The Cabinet lias agreed to make tho following appropriations :—Clifton Seaward Bush Road, L 390 ; Stewart Island and Southland roads, L 70 0; repairs to police station, Timaru, L 275 ; Otago Central (equipment Hydo's station), LIOOO. Tne Government have made an o«cr t<y' purchase the Mokihinui Coal CompUijy's railway at a price recommended by /the engineers who were sent to spocially report on the condition of tho line.
