The amended regulations for examinations under the Dentists Act liavo boon gazetted. The despatch from tho Secretary of State, respecting the exchange of light gold coins appears in the Gazette, and another despatch allows the constabulary officers in the colonies to wear their uniform at levees. The Customs revenue collected in New Zealand last month amounted to LI 15,033 10s 2d, the estimate being L 131,250. _ In the previous month the collections amounted to L 131,821 9s The total for the first quarter of tho present, financial year is L3G7,51112s Bd, cr L1G,338 7s 5d less than the estimate. Last month Dunedin contributed L 28,970 18s 8d; Wellington, L 24.870 17s lid ; Auckland, L 24,205 12s ; Lyttclton and Christchurch, Ll6, (555 14s 9d. Tho Postmaster-General states that tho actual saving as between the cost of purchasing and fitting up the Terranora and the probable cost of using one of tho Eastern Extension Company's steamers has been between L6OOO and L7OOO, while the cable has been righted in at least 20 days less than the very shortest time that would have been possible under tho old system. There is, of course, tho further advantage that the colony now litis its own repairing steamer on tho spot to make good any further breakage. An accident happened on board tho Terranora yesterday afternoon, while running out tho new cable in Lyoll Bay. The cable jumped out of the hawse-pipe, and jammed Captain Lees, Captain Gray (pilot), and Seaman Moore against tho bulwarks. Tho latter was injured about the body, and was removed to tho hospital. The others were not seriously hurt. The Terranora returns to the Straits this afternoon, and no difficulty is expected in picking up and repairing the single core cable, which is broken 19 miles from this end. The beer duty for tho month was L41(59; Auckland, L 937 ; Wellington, L 509 ; Christchurch, L 785; Dunedin, L 970. For tho quarter tho total is L 13,426. AUCKLAND. July 1. Sailed—Rachael Cohen, brigantine, for Melbourne, via tho Thames. A small detached cottage was destroyed by fire at Devonport. The owner, named Parr, lives in Auckland. Tho cottago was occupied by an old couple named Handell. The house was in flames when discovered. The occupants gob out just in time. The insurances aro unknown. WESTPORT. July 1. A fire broke out at 4.30 this morning in a fruiterer's shop, next door to the Victoria Hotel, in Lower Palmerston-stroet, leased by Mrs Ranklin. The shop was destroyed, as well as tho adjoining hotel and the Salvation Army barracks. Other buildings in the vicinity were scorched. Fleming's (draper) shop opposite was slightly damaged. Tho efforts of tho people with buckets and a hand fire engine kept the fire from spreading to other buildings in the block. Hotel insurances: LSOO in the Norwich Union, L2OO in the Commercial Union. The other insurances are unknown.
