THE CLYDE HOTEL.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I see by your issue of the 17th inst. a letter signed by the Prohibition Association Committee of Hampden. It is full of misstatements, which, in justice to myself, lam bound to correct. Re the petitions against the license being granted to my house, (the Clyde Hotel). The origin of the petitions was personal animosity towards me and my family. The signatures were by a class of people the majority of whom would the next minute sign the opposite petition, and some have actually admitted to me that they did not know the nature of the petition, but thought they were signing for both houses being closed ; and, on being told the contrary, they thought it was very unjust to close my lionse because of the personal ill-feeling shown to me by a few faddists, seeing that I have a family to support, and the lessee of the hotel being blessed with none—if one may call children a blessing these hard times. The faddists try to make capital out of my bar door being left open on Christmas Day, notwithstanding the fact being proved that it was left open by the mistake of a boarder who was ignorant of the regulations of exit of an hotel in prohibited bonis. As an example of the inconsistency of some of the faddists working for the Borough repairing the streets — who signed the petition against the license —the two hotels contributed LBO to the funds from which they are paid. They also try to cast a slur on the Licensing Committee who are some of the most intelligent men in the district, some of them being members of the County Council and Education Board. As a matter of fact none of the business men of Hampden signed the petition, nor anyone who knows the requirements of the district. How can men who are never away from their own fireside be fit judges of the requirements of the Borough.—l am, etc.. Mrs A. Walsh.
