To-night the Christ church Popular Sports Association decided, by a considerable majority, to dispense with all alcoholic liquors at their annual sports on Anniversary Day. George Ingram, a lad 15 years old, broke his leg to-day by slipping on the pavement. This is the fifth time he has suffered a similar fracture.
Bishop Grimes' reception by Catholics from all parts of Canterbury was very cordial. Immense crowds assembled at the railway station. At the pro-Cathedral addresses were presented by the parish diocese, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Hibernian Society, St. Aloysius' Guild, Literary Society, Children of Mary, besides a purse of 065 sovereigns and a footstool, the special gift of the clergy.
AUCKLAND. September 17. At a meeting of the Trades and Labor Council resolutions were passed: 1. Requesting the Government to appoint members to the Legislative Council of decided democratic proclivities, in order to secure fair representation there for the labor interest. 2. Condemning the action of the Council re the Labor Bills. 3.
Expressing sympathy with Sir George Grey in his defeat of the Friendly Societies Amendment Bill. 4. Approval of the Government policy in the execution of public works on the co-operative principle. 5. Denouncing the newly formed National Association as an attempt to deprive labor of its rights, Pierce Lanagan, contractor, has filed his schedule. His secured debts are L 7565, and unsecured L4OOO.
JSELSON. September 17. The foundation stone of flic new Presbyterian Church -was laid this afternoon by Mr M'Kerrow, in the presence of a large concourse of people. Most of the local clergy were on the platform, and represented Anglican, Wesley an, Congregational and Baptist Churches. Mr M'Kerrow, who was presented with handsome working tools of silver and polished wood, was assisted by the Rev. James Patterson, of Wellington; both these gentlemen delivering admirable speeches. The Rev. W. Robb, of Blenheim, occupied the chair, and the Rev. MrM'Kenzie, of Lyttelton. and the Rev. Mr Crump, of Richmond (Wesleyan), took part in the proceedings. The new church replaces that the foundation stone of which was laid some 43 years ago this evening, the event being further celebrated by a conversazione, the attendance at which was very large.
