The ship Northumberland from, London, 60 days out, arrived last night. She brings-244 passengers, and, fas six mild cases of measles existed among them, she has been placed in quarantine. DUNEDIN. December] 26. Arrived, 25th Hawea, s.s., from borth ; Vision, brig, from Newcastle; Nelson, ship, from Glasgow. Sailed, 26th—Moa, brig, for Kaipara.
CHRISTCHURCn. December 26.
Meetings have been held at Lincoln and Little River, drawing the; ,attention of. the Government to the unfinished state of the branch line to Akaroa. The formation for 16 miles from the junction at Lincoln has been long completed, and four miles of rails laid, but there the work stops, and the money spent in construction is bringing in no return. The line was recommended by the Royal Commission, and will tap a rich timber district.
A man was nearly drowned at Sumner yesterday. He was bathing and was carried off his feet. When got out he was insensible. It took half an hour to get him round, The Qarisbrook Cricket Club (Dundin) commence a series of matches here to-morrow, the first being with the Ashley County. The Government have refused the request of the Akaroa Borough Council to to take off the extra sixpence charged on on each telegram ; although the offices of postmaster and telegraphist have been combined there is still a deficiency in the latter department. A lad named Creswell was out pig hunting on Christmas Day, and accidently shot himself in the arm, inflicting a nasty wound,
