WELLINGTON. May fThe Customs revenue for the principal ports of the colony in April was L 103,050. Keels, who recently attempted suicide, was committed to the lunatic asylum, being quite mad. The foundation stone of the new St. Peter's Church, was laid to-day by Bishop Hadfield. F. C. Kreeft, produce merchant, has assigned his estate to Plimmer, Reeves and Co. The deficiency is LI7SS. At a meeting of the JDunpdin Presbytery to-day, Dr. Stuart said the Church Extension Fund was in a deplorable condition, and that ministers must- make ail effort to increase the fund, as it was a most important mission. The Foreign Mission Fund was better supported, though, in his opinion, of less importance. The Star complains bitterly of the del:iy in the transmission of telegraphic messages. CHRISTCH URCH. May 7. In consequence of the charges made by Dr. Mark against- Dr. Chilton, the house surgeon at the Hospital, a special meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board is to be held to enquire into them. Sailed—Larfiothe Piquet, French war ship, for Tahiti. wanganui. . May 7. An inquest was held, to-day, on the body of the man killed by the boiler explosion. The Jury. returned an open verdict, there not being sufficient evidence to show what caused the explosion. The Government certificate authorised the working of the boiler up to 401bs of steam, while evidence shewed that just previous to the explosion the steam pressure was 451bs.

The medical report on water supply recommends filtering beds on the margins of Westmere and Lake Swampy. May 8. Mr. Freeman Jackson reports :—Brisk demand for cattle. Best quality beef, 253 per lOOlbs. ; inferior, 17s 6d to 20s. Store cattle, full rates. Sheep dull of sale ; fat wethers, 8s to 9s; store, 2s to 4s. TIMARU. May 7. . The Grand Orange Lodge meets in Timaru on Wednesday next. A large attendance of the brethren is anticipated. A lad named James Davidson was kicked in the loins by a horse, to-day, in his father's stables. Nothing serious, however, is anticipated.

WESTPORT. May 7. A fire broke out in a .kitchen adjoining Sheahan's Hotel at a .quarter, to one this morning. The flames rapidly, despite the hard work»of the townspeople, and in a short time two private cottages, the hotel, and a large hall were levelled to the ground. Mr. Sheahan had just taken possession of the house, laying out a good sum on it. He and his family are now destitute. The property was insured in Yictoria Company in favor of the mortgagees.
