THE GAOL.

The Commissioners of Enquiry into the Gaol, report the building to be unsuitable. It transpired the prisoners are occasionally allowed matches. The report points out the danger of fire, owing to the want of space, and the prisoners being associated in cells at night. The report recommends the erection of new buildings. It expresses approval of the task system and exertion. Money returns, by the governor, attached to the report, for the year ending March 31st, 1875, showed the total value of prison labour to be L 9990 ; the expenditure on salaries and contingencies, L 5362 ; surplus, L 4676.
