The World draws attention to the following advertisement in the Daily News, of September 9 : —" ' Crystal Palace.— Horse-races (flat, gentlemen-riders ; flat, lady-riders; bare-backed, four-in-hand) and Roman chariot - races to - morrow (Thursday) at 5.30, on the Great Hippodrome Course (weather permitting). One shilling day.' No one, I suppose, cares whether gentlemen-riders are flat, round, square, or oblong, but when lady-riders are announced, in addition to being flat, as being ' bare-backed four-in-hand,' it is time some energetic protest against such exhibitions were made. My excellent friend, the Countess of Grundy is, I need scarcely say, much shocked, and I trust the directors of the Crystal Palace will give the matter their immediate attention."

There was a very numerous attendance at the sale of Mr. Fantham's Shorthorns, at the farm, on the Lincoln Road, Christchurch. Tnis was the first sale of his stock. Mr. Kewton, of Messrs. J. T. Ford and Co., acted in the capacity of auctioneer. The bull Royal Gwynne realised 300 guineas; Viceroy, 190 guineas; Darlington, 115; the imported bulls Eighth Duke of York, 175 guineas, and Duke of Brailes Sixth, 100 guineas. The cow Rosebud was passed in at 350 guineas. A very fine cow, Motherless, realised 76 guineas ; and a pretty roan by the Count of Oxford brought 50 guineas- The sale may be taken altogether success. Mr. Fantham's fame as a bregj|g|rof- stock is well known throughout , and the herd submitted for-fs|e elicited expressions of great approbation from the company present.
