MR. VAILE'S ROTARY ENGINE.

The Auckland "Star" says : —"The daily trials which are now going on in Mr. Masefield's Foundry, point with more certainty to I the fact that Mr. Robert Vaile has succeeded j in originating a most important invention, and one which is likely to effect a revolution in the history of machinery. The escape of steam which at first provoked adverse comment among engineers, has been most entirely obviated by a clever but simple device, which shows the inventor to be a man of very ready expedient. There is now every, reason to believe that the surfaces of the pistons and cylinders will not be unduly worn or strained by the tremendous power brought to bear. A continuous trial for a length of ' 1 time will, however, bo necessary to prove this to the satisfaction of critics. The 'beat' of the engine is good, and shows that the work is clear, and that there is no unnecessary play between the surfaces. The doubt with which engineers regard the invention is only natural, and the history of all great inventions, and shows that Mr. Vaile, in this respect, only repeats the experiences of Stephenson, Watt, Arkwright, and other great men" It will be a proud day. for Auckland if the young city of the Southern Seas shall be found to have perfected an invention of such world-wide utility." >
