ACCIDENT AT PAPAKAIO.
A singular accident occurred at Papakaio yesterday morning at ten o'clock. A man named John Lindsay was engaged well-sinking, and when descending to liis work, tlie rope broke, and he was precipitated to the bottom. He was missed, and on a search being made, the poor fellow was discovered at the bottom of the shaft. On being brought to the surface, it was found lie had sustained a very severe compound comminuted fracture of the left leg, and severe sprain of the right ankle. Dr. De Lautour was sent for, and after ascertaining the nature of the injury, he returned to town, and took out Dr. Vvaitt to assist him to amputate the leg, which operation was successfully performed. The patient is now progressing as satisfactorily as can be expected from the severe and extensive nature of the injury. It is rather a singular fact that while Dr. De Lautour was waiting for Dr. AYaitfc to assist him in amputating Lindsay's leg, Dr. Waitt was expecting the arrival of Dr. De Lautour to perform a similar o ifa.ee on Page's limb.
