CLASS IS WANTED

Country Will Not Be Any Trouble (From "N.Z. Truth's" Christchurch Rep.) Seven of the nine runners m the Homeby Steeplechase on Saturday are engaged m the Grand National Steeplechase, but as far as the public are concerned the running of Lord Ranald, Snowfall, Kapuna and Wharncliffe will contain most interest. QMEO, the present favorite for the National, will most likely compete at Manawatu, and Radiate and Valves, which ran at Timaru last Saturday, can, on that form, be counted out of the considerations. There is a doubt existing about the condition of Lord Ranald as he has not raced since this meeting last year. He has only been quartered at Riccarton for a matter of weeks but he bears signs of a good deal of work, and no fault can be found with his schooling. He may not yet be fitted for a long staying task like the National, but he appears ready to tackle a shorter race like the Homeby, and as he has proved himself equal to the country at Riccarton he must be given a royal chance. Snowfall has not raced since Dunedin. He is a stayer, and judging by the way he cleared the stiff Wingatui country, the fences at Riccarton should not cause him much trouble. Snowfall has shown all his speed at the finish of his races, and the Homeby presents a very favorable opportunity to his connections to try him out forthe National. Radiate was very sore, when he pulled up at Timaru and cannot be seriously regarded. Wharncliffe, however, looks like coming back into his own. His form m the North Island since coming m this winter was fair, and though not showing the speed that Lord Ranald has m his schooling tasks, he has cleared the schooling fences all right. About Kapuna there is a doubt. He has had no racing, and as he was never a very brilliant . sort, the good things heard of him from "Wingatui have to be taken for granted. Kaikahu has had a lot of work since June, but does not appeal, while Valves' cannot be seriously considered if his Timaru running is to be relied upon. , However, it takes class jumpers to win over the Riccarton country, and these can be found m Lord Ranald and Snowfall.
