At the age of 21 he found hintself installed as Deputy Commissioner of Police m the then newly - captured territory of Samoa. He left New Zealand In 1914 with the batch of men who collared the erstwhile German possession. H e was m France m '17 and *18 till a bad gas attack on the Ypres sector did him m for good as far as the war was concerned. A long legal career has given him any amount of experience. For seven years he was a Judge's Associate, m which capacity he must have gleaned an excellent knowledge of the ins and outs of his profession, and m 1924 he served as secretary on the Taxation Committee that inquired into land and income tax.
