WILLOW WIELDERS LAY ON THE WOOD OVER WEEK-END

BATSMEN PLAY HAVOC WITH BOWLING Foley and Dempster Rattle Up Big Tallies for Institute HOLLINGS KNOCKS AVERAGES

(From CC N^L Tnitt's" Special "Wellington. Representative). Wellington batsmen got right on to the runs last Saturday, and some of the score books made pretty reading, especially m view of the important engagements with the Englishmen later \n the season. It was very pleasing to find possible representative players, Wellington and New Zealand', amongst those who piled up big scores.

THAT prolific opening pair, C S. Dempifter and EL Foley, added another meritoriouß. partnership to their record of big: scores. The pair defied the Hutt bowling for the greater part of the afternoon, and before they were separated there were 258 runs on the right side of the ledger. • ;" Dempster's contribution was 137 and Foley's 162. .Foley fully justified all the good .things that were said about rtim m this column last week and demonstrated clearly that he has a mortgage on a place m the "Wellington eleven. He and Dempster will! make an invaluable opening pair against the barrage of the English trundlers. *■ Hollings, made a -welcome return to form on Saturday, piling on '145 runs against the best bowling that University could produce. Hollings was at the top tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiniiiiiiiiim

of his form a couple of seasons ago, but last year he had a lean time and It Is gratifying to find that once more he has his eye m. He has claims on a place In the Wellington eleven. Aim, the University bowler, who made such a successful debut against Hutt In the previous round, had no luck against Wellington on Saturday. He failed to collect a wicket and he had B 9 runs scored off him. Nelson was the most succesßful trundler for University, who had a tiring day In . the field. . Airey, another left-hander who must be seriously considered for representative honors this season, followed up his century of the previous Saturday by rattling oh 74 m good style. He helped Hollings to put ' on 112 for Wellington, and while at the crease, he scored twice as fast as his partner. McGlrr was amongst the bowlers whose averages suffered on Saturday. He could make no impression on Dempster, Foley, Burt and Bilby, the Institute quartet which was, responsible for the fine total of 386 for two wickets. He had 79 runs knocked off his bowling. Veteran Ernie Judd bore the brunt of tha work for Hutt, and he was responsible for tha dismissal of both : Qempster and Foley, although the wickets cost over 50 apiece. Rotherham, the ©^Cambridge player, found a length on Saturday, and he collected four Midland wickets at small cost. This player was included In the Plunket Shield eleven, last season, but ho did not meet with, any great measure of success. However, he 1b a uaefuL oIL- rounder and \frill bear watching. ; A suggestion has been made by the Wellington Cricket Association that the Plunket « Shield rules should be revised to provide for home-and-home matches between the four provinces. \ If the suggestion is adopted — it Is now being considered by • the New Zealand Council— it will bring- the Plunket Shield competition into line, with the Sheffield Shield competition"- In- Australia,. The proposal Has a lot. ta commend' It, as New Zealand at the present does not get enough big cricket, and In consequence the standard of play Is not as. high as It. should be.. . Home-and-home matches would" place a big strain on leading players m the matter of leave and so on, but that difficulty has been overcome m Australia and it should bo. possible- to- overcome, i t -her e.
