ABSENCE Of RE-HANDICAPS AN INCENTIVE
THE Christchurch Hunt Club meeting will be held at Riccarton on Saturday and, though the stakes are only moderate, the racing is going to be high class. The meeting gives trainers who have horses engaged in' the, National treble an opportunity of sending their ' charges along m a race, which is a better means of training than all the track gallops. Then, on top of this, is the added inducement that the winner of any one of the three big races on Saturday, should he be included m tHe acceptors for the National treble, will not be re-handicapped.' The fact that the winners of the Open Hurdles, the Homeby Steeplechase and the Brabazon Handicap will not be penalized for their engagements at the National is an important one. Were there a penalty or a re-handicap awaiting the winners the racing on Saturday would be viewed with the utmost suspicion. fc With the conditions as they are, an owner who fails to step his horse out to do its best is silly to himself. A race won is better than three to win ! Of course, there is sure to be doubtful running on Saturday but, unless all the trainers and owners m the country have gone mad, there will only be a minimum amount — not \ the maximum always encountered at > a small meeting which precedes a bigger gathering. rf!llllllil!lil!llllll!lllilill[||||||l!li:ill!i
